SPLW
Maori Carved Paddles

You
may or may not know that we got involved with carrying costumes and
props from the Xena and Hercules series when the shows were discontinued.
In doing this, we've learned a little of the culture and developed
a fondness for Maori arts. The Maori are the native people of New
Zealand. They have a long, wonderful history with the islands, with
beautiful ceremonies and art.
Among
these art forms, there is the carving of jade, wood, and bone. I bought
a Maori war club for The Rattler as a gift, as it looked to be a wonderful
paddle. Once it arrived, we were hooked. There are several, including
myself, who have a love/hate relationship with the piece. The strength
of the wood and the effects of the carving are quite awesome. Well
we had to get a few more, and decided to share some with our Snake
Pit friends.
A
bit more about the Maori. Status and prestige are gained from Maori
ancestors who contribute to the living by giving spiritual strength
and guidance to those who call on them. It is for this reason that
traditional artforms such as the carved walking sticks, greenstone
necklaces and bone carvings are treated with respect, as they carry
the spirit of the original owners. When we told someone about the
paddle, their superstitions said "don't use it". We wanted to let
you know the history so you can decide for yourself.
All
of these paddles are hand carved in Rotorua New Zealand. They are
quite hefty. They have embedded paua (mother of pearl) shells on each
side and are made from New Zealand timber ~ Kauri.
